AI receptionist or answering service? How they compare for mechanics.

We read the websites of about fifteen AI receptionists and answering services sold in Australia, grouped them by how they work, and lined them up against what a mobile mechanic needs from a phone call.

The three options

Most of what's on offer falls into two groups. We've called them Competitor A and Competitor B rather than naming products, because features and prices change often and we'd rather compare the approach than a single product on a single day.

  • Competitor A: AI receptionists. About a dozen AI voice agents sold in Australia, most of them built for trades in general. They answer every call, most can book into a calendar or job software, and most charge a monthly plan with a set number of minutes, then a rate per minute.
  • Competitor B: human answering services. Australian call centres where a person answers in your business name. They mostly take a message and send it to you by text or email; booking into a diary is usually an extra. You pay a monthly fee plus a charge for each call.
  • MechConnect. An AI receptionist built for mobile mechanics. It books jobs into a time that fits around your other jobs and the drive between them, for one monthly price.

When Competitor A is the better choice

If you run a workshop on job software like Simpro or Fergus and want the receptionist to create job cards straight in it, many AI receptionists connect to more systems than we do. Some also let you pick from several voices, take calls in other languages, or keep a recording of every call if that's what you want.

When Competitor B is the better choice

If you want a real person on every call, or your calls are long enquiries that need judgement rather than a booking, a human answering service is the honest answer. If you only get a handful of calls a month, paying per call can also cost less.

Where MechConnect fits

If you're a mobile mechanic, the time a job takes is only half the booking. The other half is getting there. MechConnect works out the drive from the job before and to the job after, so the times it offers are times you can actually make. It reads the address back, checks it's inside your area, never quotes a price, and costs the same in a busy month as a quiet one. See how scheduling works or what a call sounds like.

How we compared

On 2 October 2026 we read the public websites (features and pricing pages) of twelve AI receptionists and three human answering services that sell to Australian businesses, plus three US products built for car workshops. Each row in the table describes what most products in a group say about themselves. It won't be true of every single one, and products change. If you think we've got something wrong, tell us and we'll fix it.

Questions

Which option is cheapest?

It depends on how many calls you get. Per-minute and per-call pricing can cost less in a quiet month and more in a busy one. MechConnect is one monthly price with no per-call charges or call caps, so a busy week costs the same. See pricing.

Why don't you name the competitors?

Products change their features and prices often, and a comparison that names a product goes out of date the day it changes. Grouping them by how they work keeps this page useful, and fair.

Can I switch from an answering service?

Yes. Forward the number your customers already know to us, or use the number we give you. Nothing changes for your callers except that a booking gets made.

Do AI receptionists record calls?

Most of the ones we looked at do. MechConnect doesn't record any audio. Every call is written down so the job can be followed up, and callers are told that in the greeting.
